What is an audio converter?

An audio converter changes an audio file from one format or codec to another - for example turning an M4A voice memo into an MP3 that plays anywhere. This one runs entirely in your browser: your files never upload to a server, decoding and encoding happen locally on your device.

It accepts WAV, MP3, M4A, FLAC, OGG, AAC and Opus files as input and converts them to MP3 (128-320 kbps) or uncompressed WAV.

How to convert M4A to MP3

M4A is the default format for Apple Music purchases and iPhone voice memos, but not every app or device plays it. MP3 plays everywhere. Here is how to convert M4A to MP3:

  1. Drop your M4A files - drag them onto the upload area or click to browse. Each file can be up to 100 MB.
  2. Pick MP3 and a bitrate - 320 kbps for best quality.
  3. Convert and download - or grab everything as ZIP.

Convert MP3 to WAV

Select WAV as the output format and the converter produces uncompressed 16-bit PCM WAV files. That is useful for DAWs, samplers, and CDJs that want lossless input - some hardware and software simply works better with WAV than with compressed formats.

One thing to know: converting MP3 to WAV does not restore quality that was already lost when the MP3 was made. It repackages the audio losslessly from that point on, so no further quality is lost in editing or playback chains that re-encode compressed input.

Convert FLAC, OGG, AAC and Opus to MP3

FLAC to MP3 - FLAC is the standard for lossless music archives, but its files are big and support outside desktop players is patchy. Convert FLAC to MP3 at 320 kbps for portable copies that play on anything.

OGG and Opus to MP3 - OGG and Opus show up in game audio, stream rips, and voice notes from messaging apps. Convert them to MP3 to edit, share, or play them in tools that do not support those codecs.

AAC to MP3 - raw .aac streams (as opposed to AAC inside an M4A container) play in fewer places than you would expect. Converting to MP3 makes them universally compatible.

Note: OGG and Opus input may not work in Safari - use Chrome or Firefox for those.

Convert to MP3 at 320 kbps

320 kbps is the highest bitrate the MP3 format supports, and it is this converter's default. In blind listening tests, a 320 kbps MP3 is nearly indistinguishable from a lossless original at a fraction of the file size.

Which MP3 bitrate should you choose?

The bitrate controls how much audio data the MP3 file keeps per second. Here is a practical breakdown:

When in doubt, go with 320 kbps. The file size difference between 128 and 320 is only a few megabytes for a typical song, but the quality gap can be significant.

Convert multiple audio files at once

Drop in any mix of formats - a folder of M4As, a few FLACs, an OGG rip - and convert them all in parallel. Every file gets the same output format and bitrate settings, and when they are done you download the whole batch as a single ZIP.

MP3 vs WAV: which format do you need?

Both output formats have their place. Here is how they compare:

MP3 (320 kbps)WAV
Size~7.5 MB per 5-min song~50 MB per 5-min song
QualityVery good (lossy)Perfect from source (lossless PCM)
CompatibilityPlays everywhereUniversal, but heavy for sharing
Editing useReference and playbackDAWs, samplers, mastering

Pick MP3 when you are sharing, streaming, or saving space. Pick WAV when a DAW, sampler, or upload target wants lossless input.

Converting audio for SoundCloud

SoundCloud accepts lossless uploads and recommends them - it re-compresses every upload for streaming, so a lossless source gives the best result. Convert to WAV for your upload masters, and to MP3 at 320 kbps for promos and demos sent over email or DMs.

Frequently asked questions

Is this audio converter free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermark, no file limit beyond 100 MB per file.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your audio never leaves your device.

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

Drop your M4A files onto the converter, choose MP3 and a bitrate (320 kbps for best quality), then hit convert. Download files individually or as a ZIP.

Can I convert MP3 to WAV?

Yes. Select WAV as the output format. You get uncompressed 16-bit PCM WAV files that work in any DAW or player.

Which MP3 bitrate should I pick?

320 kbps is near-transparent quality for music and the safe default. Use 192 kbps to save space, or 128 kbps for voice recordings.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you want, mix input formats freely, convert them all in parallel and download everything as one ZIP.

Does it work on iPhone and Safari?

WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC and FLAC input work in Safari. OGG and Opus input may not - Safari doesn't decode those codecs. Chrome and Firefox handle all seven.

Does converting reduce audio quality?

Converting to MP3 is lossy, so always start from the best source you have. Converting to WAV is lossless from the point of conversion - it won't degrade the audio further.

What's the maximum file size?

100 MB per file. There's no limit on the number of files.
